Teaching Philosophy

My teaching philosophy centers on creating inclusive, engaging
learning environments that prepare students to become critical
thinkers and effective practitioners. I believe in:

  • Connecting theory to real-world practice
  • Priortizing both high expectations and high support
  • Practicing critical reflexivity
  • Integrating social justice principles throughout curriculum
  • Supporting diverse learning styles and backgrounds

Student Mentorship

I prioritize student mentorship at both the Master’s and undergraduate levels in the teaching environment and in research projects related to criminal justice, social policy, and community interventions. Mentorship has spanned across the following disciplines:

  • Criminal Justice
  • Law
  • Public Administration
  • Nursing
  • Education Policy and Leadership
  • Social Work

Student Feedback.

Mariah is one of the most personable, compassionate, kind, and knowledgeable professors I have had. Mariah’s extensive experience in community and organizational advocacy and assessments made her an incredible resource, bringing her lived experiences to illustrate the concepts we were learning. I would retake this class, just for Mariah.

– MSW student

She implemented a variety of mediums (readings, videos, group activities) to help synthesize the material and reach all levels of learning. She was encouraging and offered great feedback or ideas on papers and projects. She has a great pedagogical approach, and the University of Utah is so, so, so lucky to have her!

– MSW student

Mariah never made anyone feel like their answers were “wrong.” She is very non–biased in her teaching approach, and does a great job with making students feel heard, rather than dismissed.

– MSW student

Mariah created a classroom environment and clearly advocated for her students throughout the semester. …Mariah was a fantastic facilitator and leader.
